Framework Friday: May 17, 2024
A tool for defining employee roles, a former Navy Seal's tools for overcoming obstacles, and the Alcyoneus Principle.
Hello.
I’m always searching for frameworks (principles, rules, and tools) that I can use or improve. I call them “stealables.” And yes, in some instances, stealing is ok! See here and here.
Here are some stealables I found to take with you this weekend.
No. 1: A tool for Defining Employee Roles.
In the 15 minutes it takes to drink a coffee and watch this video, you will have a general understanding of three steps you can take to define company roles for employees.
Background: I've been following this Youtube creator, Layla at ProcessDriven, for about a month. Her frameworks are excellent and practical. She specializes in building business processes and is pretty animated in her style.
Hiring or being an employee who knows their position, role, and responsibilities is a crucial element in company growth. There are others, but this one is near the top.
How it works: She explains three-steps: 1) Define the Process, 2) Match the process to the role, and 3) Mainitain a job role and title organization chart. Here is a blog post where she give more details if you prefer to read about the process.
Why it matters: Without hesitation, I will tell you that a common problem I see in businesses I work with is employees with ill-defined roles and responsibilities. Fix this, and a lot of other issues fade away.
However, the problem remains theoretical without a defined process to make it tactical. This video will do that for you.
No. 2: Tools to Fuel Past Obstacles and Document Wins.
I'm not into "journaling," but I liked two concepts from this video from the former Navy Seal, Chad Metcalf–so I stole and adapted them.
Stealable No. 1: The first stealable is what I will call the "Fuel List." Metcalf describes how, in Seal training, instructors would tell them to make a list of all the doubters and people who told them they wouldn't make it. And then use it as "fuel" to push through when it seemed the hardest. I like that idea!
It reminds me of this scene from How I Met Your Mother!
Stealable No. 2: The second stealable is a framework for recording and revisiting current situations and obstacles months later.
The idea is that you will be surprised about how many problems you overcame but forgot about. This document becomes a record of your "wins" and a reminder that problems don't usually mean the end of the world.
As I understood it, you just write down your answers to three questions: 1) What Obstacle am I facing? 2) What's my Objective? and 3) What's my plan to Overcome the obstacles? Then, you put it away and revisit what you wrote six months later. What you’ll probably see is that you got past the problem and have moved on. You just didn’t realize it. Now you do.
I'm thinking of calling it the "Triple-O Memo," but I'm open to suggestions. Let me know if you have any other ideas.
No. 3: A Herculean Principle for Defeating Giants.
Here’s an excerpt from my Library about the "Alcyoneus Principle." It's pronounced Al-Ki-O-Nes. You can hear it here.
Here is a video telling the mythological story of Heracles and Alcyoneus. You can read more about them here.
Now that you have some context, here is the excerpt:
The Takeaway: Don't fight to an opponent's strengths but maneuver them to yours.
The next step is learning the How’s of doing it.
Take care and have a good weekend!
P.S.
Leave a message if you have a specific topic or question that you think I could use as the basis for a recommendation. And be on the lookout to see if I find a creative way to weave the answer into one of the posts.
Jaime- Thanks for sharing this. I've always loved Navy Seal's mindset-building approaches. Hope you're well this week. Cheers, -Thalia
